Friends of Isobel Inc supports Isobel who has cerebral palsy and the family initially began fundraising to provide Isobel with Stem cell treatment which took place in Germany during 2010. As the things we take for granted like walking and talking are every day struggles for Isobel. The treatment has the potential to improve fine motor skills, speech, and possibly allow her to one day walk unassisted, but more importantly give her independence.
Before treatment means of mobility was commando crawling or rolling and she was only able to say 'Mum'. Since returning home Isobel has made substantial improvements. Isobel's attitude seeming happier and more accepting of others, her balance has improved dramatically, her vocabulary has reached in excess of seventy words, her eyes appear more focused, she has started crawling and for the first time sat up independently beginning of August.
In time there is no doubt this procedure will take place in Australia, with studies already underway in Melbourne using cord blood stem cells, this research is in conjunction with Duke University in the US, but for now, overseas clinics are the only hope for Isobel to achieve the goal of independence.
However at this stage our goal has had to take a detour! With ongoing appointments our family has had to reluctantly accept the inevitable. We have come to realise that a vehicle suitable for Isobel’s Wheelchair has to take priority at this moment, as there will always be equipment that requires transportation with Isobel.
